WNBL TotW5: Tough round but an easy pick

IT may have been one of this WNBL season's best rounds but selecting our Team of the Week was not all that difficult, Townsville barely escaping Adelaide, Southside handling Canberra, and on the road, Bendigo staving off Lightning in overtime. So who is left. Hmm, not a lot of chin-stroking required, surely?

Heading into Melbourne to face the undefeated league leader was going to be Perth Lynx's ultimate test.

Could their run-and-gun, threeball mania unsettle the composure of a Boomers outfit continually finding new ways to win?

Short answer?

Yep.

Import Aari McDonald sizzled in her head-to-head clash with fellow WNBA guard Jordin Canada, Anneli Maley had a 17-17 points-boards double, but it was her three 3-point makes in the last quarter that broke this wide open and set up the astonishing 80-63 rout.

Perth's 23-9 second quarter turned the game around, Miela Goodchild prominent for a 13-point half, Mackenzie Clinch-Hoycard sticking two threes, Emily Potter compiling 16 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.

Every player contributed somewhere and when Melbourne fought back to tie the game late in the third before threatening again in the fourth, Amy Atwell bobbed up with a triple when it most was needed.

Having succumbed previously to comebacks after creating what should have been match-winning leads, Perth's mettle was truly tested.

And this time around, the Lynx responded and were not only solid steel, but also our Team of the Week. Amazing what a bit of judicious subbing can do!
