WNBL TotW7: Three Teams on Fire

OK, there is no doubt Round 7 of the WNBL season produced so many amazing results that nominees for our coveted Team of the Week honours were legion. First there was Perth smashing Sydney, then Canberra breaking through, Adelaide securing a 1-1 split and Townsville on fire. It was no easy choice.

Canberra breaking its 8-game losing streak and against Melbourne was extremely impressive, although the loss in the second quarter of the Boomers' lead import Jordin Canada did play a role.

That's not to take anything away from the joy of the Caps' long-overdue breakthrough win. It was a gem. But was it more dazzling than the way Perth totally dismantled Sydney?

A 40-point win over one of the preseason title favourites?

Wow.

The Lynx meant business and so did Lightning when it struck down Melbourne after first narrowly losing to Bendigo in a thriller.

But in the end, for us there was an important fact to remember. In most (if not ALL) preseason polls and predictions, Southside Flyers and Sydney Flames were selected as championship contenders.

In that case, it is impossible to go past what defending champion Townsville achieved this round.

First the Fire went down to Melbourne and flogged Southside 105-77. Then they travelled on to Sydney and smashed the Flames 70-48.

In total Townsville beat two of the "championship contenders" on the road in the same round by a combined 50 points!

Now THAT is impressive and certainly singles out the Fire as our Team of the Week.
