WNBL TotW3: Toughest round yet for top Team

WNBL Round 3 was easily the most difficult so far to select a stand-out club as our Team of the Week because there were so very many aspirants for the highly-coveted title. Even Canberra and Bendigo - which both lost twice - had compelling cases after quality performances.

How good was Perth again, for example? Turning back a spirited Bendigo, with Aari McDonald burying 34 points, certainly has the Lynx in contention once more.

Townsville and Sydney put up their hands too but, at home, they only did as expected in putting away the Capitals.

Yes, no-one wants acknowledgement or a pat on the back for losing but you have to like the way Canberra is going about its development. Good times cannot be far away.

And what about Bendigo, first pushing Perth then coming back for a second game against a fresh league-leading Melbourne at home for the first time?

Recipe for disaster? You bet.

Did that happen? Nope.

Kelsey Griffin's return and 33-point career-best haul - and she's already had quite the career! - meant it took until the final quarter for the Boomers to assert their superiority, Sara Blicavs, Aimie Rocci and Keely Froling all hitting big shots.

But Jordin Canada again was the mastermind on the floor, scoring 26 points with eight rebounds, seven assists and a steal as Melbourne sealed the deal to stay unbeaten.

So who should get the nod?

Well in the end, it was quite easy. The red hot championship favourite Southside Flyers flew in to Adelaide and copped a Lightning lump on the rump in what many would call an upset at the same level as Perth beating Sydney.

With so much scorepower, the Flyers were expected to blow away the young home team but instead were held to 56 paltry points as Izzy Borlase led Lightning into some post-season consideration. Let's remember, they still have World Cup All Star Five selection Steph Talbot to return too.

Yes, in the end, Adelaide Lightning as our Round 3 Team of the Week was an easy call.
